Chase Sapphire Preferred Understanding How The Rewards Program Works
New Cardmember Bonus: You'll earn 40,000 bonus points after you make $4,000 or more in purchases in the first 3 months from account opening. After that, you'll receive your bonus points in 6-8 weeks, as long as your account is open.
Authorized User New Cardmember Bonus: You'll earn 5,000 bonus points after you add your first authorized user and you make a purchase, both within the first 3 months from account opening. After that, you'll receive your bonus points in 6-8 weeks, as long as your account is open.
You are eligible for both New Cardmember bonuses unless you are currently a Chase Sapphire Preferred cardmember, or a previous a Chase Sapphire Preferred cardmember who received a new cardmember bonus or similar bonus within the past 24 months.
Buying products and services with your card, in most cases, will count as a purchase; however, the following types of transactions do not count:
You earn points when you, or an authorized user, use the card to make purchases of products and services, minus returns or refunds.
1 point for each $1 you spend.
2 points total for each $1 spent (one additional point on top of the 1 point per $1 earned on each purchase) when you use your card for purchases in the travel and restaurant categories. This may also be referred to as 2X points.
For example, you earn 2X points on travel – from airfare and hotels to taxis and tolls. You also earn 2X points on dining at restaurants – from fast food to fine dining. For more information on how merchants are included in Reward Categories, see the “About this Offer” section below.
There is no maximum on the number of points you can earn.
You'll see the points you've earned on chase.com and on your monthly card billing statement.
You may use your points to redeem for travel, transfers to participating frequent travel partners, gift cards, cash and products or services made available through our Ultimate Rewards website at chase.com/ultimaterewards or by calling the number on the back of your card.
When redeemed for cash or gift cards, 100 points equals $1 in redemption value. You need at least 2,000 points to redeem for cash.
When redeemed for travel booked through Ultimate Rewards, 100 points is worth $1.25 in redemption value. This is like getting a 20% discount on travel you get with points when compared to the cash price.
Redemption values for other reward options may be more or less than those given, above.
Your points do not expire as long as your account is open.
You can lose your points if your account is closed for any reason.
You will also earn points for every dollar they spend on purchases. You, as the primary cardmember are solely responsible for repaying all balances on this account. Authorized users will have the same charging privileges as the primary cardmember but will not be financially responsible. All correspondence, including statements and notifications, will be sent to the name and address on file for the primary cardmember. We provide account information to the credit reporting agencies for all account users. This information could impact an authorized user's credit score.
Merchants who accept Visa/MasterCard credit cards are assigned a merchant code, which is determined by the merchant or its processor in accordance with Visa/MasterCard procedures based on the kinds of products and services they primarily sell. We group similar merchant codes into categories, which may also be referred to as rewards categories, for purposes of making rewards offers to you. Please note:
For more information about the rewards categories, see Rewards Category FAQs
This is a summary of the material terms of the Chase Sapphire Preferred Rewards Program.A complete Rewards Program Agreement will be sent to you upon account approval.
